Thank you for raising this issue and the thoughtful way you presented it. My white family and friends, as well as my brown family and friends, are all horrified by the Supreme Court decision and all the illegal WCN actions that have led to this disgusting moment.
We are all in a purple state that will be made into a red state immediately. If it weren’t for intense racial gerrymandering sneakily enacted after a long-past red wave, we’d probably be a blue state by now.
We need everyone who is horrified by the Orange Antichrist to work together to defeat the regime in a peaceful manner. Unfortunately, there are so many horrors happening every day that it can be so disheartening and overwhelming that it seems difficult to know what to do about any of it at times. It is easy to feel exhausted by every offense and outrageous statement, but their evil plan is to wear us down. Yet, we must persist.
I’ve called my House representative’s office enough that the person who answers the phone says my address to me after I say my fairly common name. I am far from the only person in my district with that name. I think the confirmation of my address without my volunteering the information is meant to be chilling. I will admit that I do feel chilled enough by the person answering the phone that I should probably put on a winter jacket to make the calls.
Then, there is protesting, backing the causes on social media, persuading other people we know to care enough to act, and so on. It is a constant battle and we need everyone’s help in order to peacefully rid ourselves of the evil regime. We know Trump et al. will do anything possible to steal the next election. We need new ideas. New strategies. We need our current leaders to be fierce and clever. We need our viral posts on social media to be so sharp that it pierces the echo chamber. We all need to amplify the shouts for help!
The Democratic pushback on EVERYTHING has been weak - from state to federal level. As far as I’m concerned the Corporate Dems are dead. They will never again get my vote or my money. Progressives all the way, for the rest of what little life I have left.
I vote because my great-great grandmother could not, and now my black and brown friends cannot, and soon I will not be able to either, because I took my first husband’s name and can’t afford to correct that mistake now. We must all protect each other, because our government now uses the money and resources we provided it to jail and kill us. We must rise up with our arms around each other and bring forward a new and brighter day
Thanks for raising good points, Chris. I remember listening to a podcast last year with Sam Stein of the Bulwark...I'm paraphrasing here...basically he fresh out of school with a bunch of recent grad reporters in a room in 2015...group leader asks who thinks Trump has a chance?...a black woman raised her hand...the others thought, no way...she told the group that they don't know the same America that she does. Boy, was she right.
A lot more white people than you might think believe the ruling is BS. All the Dems I know, agree that Blacks are getting screwed. Women especially, with them overturning of Roe v Wade. The only white people I know that think racism is over, are all Trumpers. There is no talking to them, they have thought this for decades, which probably drew them to Trump to begin with. I wouldn't say it was all upbringing either, because I know plenty of siblings that are polar opposites on all things affecting Black people.
On a hopeful note, "it's the economy, stupid" is going to bite the GOP in the ass real soon. If they don't start standing up to Trump after the Primaries are over...the American Voters of all stripes...black, whites, Latinos, gay, straight, Gen Z...will not stand for the high prices brought on by Trump's tariffs and the Iran War come November...a lot of this gerrymandering will backfire.
As an old white boomer, I am disgusted by all of this. I will raise my voice, loud and strong, on behalf of ALL people. Regardless of race. Thank you for this piece. It reinforces my conviction.
For those of us stuck in the Deep South, electing black leaders in heavily black districts (read major urban metro centers) is the only option we have to elect democrats. Few whites run as Dems in majority GOP districts, which is nearly all districts. Literally no one runs against the GOP. The GOP primary is the determinant of who wins the seat - unopposed. So if you are liberal, regardless of race, your ability to have any Democrat now representing you just went up in smoke. And our state’s GOP senators are drooling automatons for the Supreme Leader. If I could pick up and move north tomorrow, I would, but it’s not that easy. The only liberal protection we have now is our city government run by a black mayor and a predominantly black council. And I trust them more than any of the whites at the state or federal level representing us.
I knew the gutting of Roe would be the first of civil rights to go and felt confident a Harris presidency would halt these types of erosions. Hence, I’m forever angry with the 2024 single-issue protest voters and those who couldn’t have been bothered to vote at all. This is easy for me to say as a white woman currently living in a charming but dysfunctional Balkan country. The majority of SCOTUS is not on the side of Americans and it’s disgusting to see Black and Brown Americans targeted like this.

Thank you for your call to gather together!
Thank you for this. So many great points.
yes, yes, and yes -- I see more "talking" here on Substack -- than I've heard in most gatherings over the last several years
♦️ Trump’s Racist Rightwing SCOTUS cabal has effectively decimated Civil Rights Voting protections for Black people.
♦️ That is a FACT. And yet, @Christopher Webb is correct — the public pushback from Democratic leaders has been tragically silent.
♦️ The late Congressman John Lewis devoted his life to making the Voting Rights Act even stronger. Now it’s shredded at our feet.
🌟 If we do NOTHING of consequence to fix this travesty — his life’s dedication to EQUAL REPRESENTATION was in vain.

💯 I completely see & agree with where you’re coming from.
Right now the only Democratic lawmakers doing the work of coming up with innovative ideas — & IMPLEMENTING them — are Progressives.
💯 Also, I’m hoping our former Vice President is rounding a corner to a more progressive stance.👇

Excellent.
I will amplify with hope the walls shake.
That’s a lie of epic proportions by Alito!!
I agree with you. Yes. We. Are. Under reacting..

Awesome article! Thank you so much!
They also under reacted when Roe v Wade was overturned..
